Chapter 5

Veronica lived in a surprisingly normal part of the city. After seeing the luxurious lifestyle Devon had accustomed himself to, with the expensive suits and the fancy cars, Ava had expected his ex-wife to share the same tastes.

On the way to Veronica’s house, Ava continued her search into Devon’s personal life. She found a few pictures of Veronica and Devon in various places, all extravagant. Interesting. She’d have Mark look at that. As if on cue, Ava received a phone call from Mark, who had gone through Devon’s files in record time.

“The man used the same password for everything,” Mark explained, appalled at the complete lack of security Devon had possessed.

As it turns out, Devon was the literal definition of someone who had started at the bottom. He came from a poor family but had poured his blood, sweat, and tears into his work and got promoted repeatedly in the firm he had worked in. Ava had to hand it to him; he was resilient and ambitious.

Then, he got interested in politics. As a lawyer, he was exposed to all sorts of injustice. There were times where he had to defend people who were so obviously guilty to the public. But he couldn’t do anything about it. He had to feed himself and his family, which at the time consisted of him and Veronica.

It was a classic story of rag to riches, which made sense why it would appeal to the public, most of whom were of modest means. What didn’t add up was how one man managed to raise enough funds to support his budding political career. It must have cost a fortune arranging all those rallies, galas, and fundraisers.

Mark had come across that same problem.

“It was rather poorly hidden, but I did find statements from the bank. Enormous amounts of money are coming in and out of different accounts. I suspect that he has various bank accounts to keep his money balanced should he ever be called out on it.”

Ava nodded. Then where was he getting the money from?

Most of the time, when someone who had nothing suddenly gained a large amount of money, it would raise suspicions. Not only was it unnatural, but it would also be too sudden and usually involved rather unsavory characters.

“Mark, please check if Devon had any connections to the local gangs. I need you to check everything relating to drugs or trafficking and see if his name pops up.”

So, Devon hardly could be an innocent victim.

When Oscar pulled up in Veronica’s driveway, Ava caught the curtains moving slightly. She smiled to herself. Well, at least someone was home. Confirmed with Oscar what she had seen, they walked to the front door.

Ava hoped that Veronica was welcoming. If she weren’t, she would be forced to get a warrant, and that wouldn’t be fun for anyone. She sure didn’t enjoy demanding to be let into someone’s home, much less someone she didn’t know and was about to question on murder.

She lingered by the doorbell and hesitated.
